Tom Richards makes a conscious choice to reference the visual vocabulary of past
technologies, and in so doing, satirically comments on the present zeitgeist of gadgetry.
Said zeitgeist was in its infancy when Erkki Kurenniemi was developing his practice and
DIMI instrument series, which has since influenced artists, musicians, and scientists alike.
In foregrounding Richards’s work with Kurenniemi’s, let us remember that The Future Is
Not What It Used to Be and reflect on how and why we got here.

This workshop is lead by Tom Richards.
